The Importance of Oil Changes

Oil Change

Changing your oil is one of the quickest, easiest, and least expensive ways to maintain your car and ensure it continues to operate as it should for as long as you own it. While most of us understand the importance of oil changes, there are still drivers who stubbornly refuse to get the job, done, making the trip from Shasta Lake City to Chico day after day with the same old oil in their engine. Learn why that’s a bad idea and how often you really need to change your engine oil to keep your motor humming.

What is the Point of an Oil Change?

Your engine oil has an essential purpose – to lubricate and cool your engine’s moving parts. As the oil in your engine circulates, it flows around those moving parts picking up dust, dirt, and small particles while drawing away heat. This process keeps your engine free of particulates and reduces the damage that can be caused by excessive friction. Changing the oil at regular intervals helps to remove those particulates and allows your engine to continue to operate smoothly ensuring you make it from Anderson to Red Bluff and back again.

What Happens When You Don’t Change Your Oil?

If you neglect to change your engine oil, that debris can build up, causing excessive wear to the engine’s delicate parts. Over time, the damage from this wear can be so great that parts will fail and even seize, leading to severe damage and potentially a total failure of your engine, requiring you to pay for an engine replacement or  purchase a new car.

How Often Do I Really Need to Change My Oil?

How often you need to change your oil depends on a number of factors, including the type of engine you have, the age of your vehicle, and the kind of oil that is recommended for use in your car. Standard oils need to be changed every 3,000-5,000 miles on average, while synthetic oils should be able to do their job longer.
